Listening to the East. Ecumenical conferences on synodalityPro Oriente and the Institute for Ecumenical Studies (IES) of the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum) are organizing two international academic conferences on synodality in the Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox traditions.

The conferences, organized as unofficial pre-synodal consultations in the context of the Synod of the Catholic Church on the theme “For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, and Mission”, will take place at the Angelicum in Rome, on 2-5 and 23-26 November 2022.

Organized under the auspices of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and the General Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops, the aim of these public ecumenical conferences is to listen to and to learn from other Christian traditions about their various understandings and experiences of synodality.

Pro Oriente and the IES have formed two academic committees to plan the conferences: that on the Eastern Orthodox tradition comprises members of the “Pro Oriente Steering Committee for Orthodox-Catholic Dialogue”, and the other on the Oriental Orthodox traditions comprises members of the Pro Oriente “Commission for Ecumenical Encounter between the Oriental Orthodox Churches and the Catholic Church” and “Forum Syriacum". Along with these two consultations, the Institute for Ecumenical Studies of the Angelicum will organize two further ecumenical conferences on the Western Christian synodal traditions.
