Orthodox Metropolitan to present ecology encyclical “Laudato si’”
A representative of the ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, the Orthodox Metropolitan of Pergamon, Johannis Zizioulas, will also speak at the scheduled
presentation of Pope Francis’ ecology encyclical in the New Synod Hall in the Vaticanat 11 am on Thursday 18 June. The Holy See newsroom announced the news, publishing the title of the encyclical “Laudato Si’ on the care of our common home”, officially, for the first time . The title is a clear reference to St. Francis’ “Laudato Sii”, the opening phrase of the Canticle of the Creatures.
The presence of Zizioulas – one of the greatest living theologians – at the presentation of the encyclical, is a crucial sign that the text will endorse Patriarch Bartholomew I’s words and ideas on the subject. Bartholomew I is very sensitive to ecological issues and someone the Argentinian Pope holds in high esteem.
Apart from the Metropolitan of Pergamon, other figures present will include: Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson, President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and Hans Joachim «John» Schellnhuber, Founder and Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and President of the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU).
The encyclical will be published in Italian, French, English, German, Spanish and Portuguese.
