Reaffirmed commitment to path from conflict to communionThe Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity (PCPCU) and the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) are today pleased to announce the publication of the updated Italian translation of the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification (JDDJ). This version of the publication is a significant step in ensuring wider distribution and continued reception of the historic ecumenical agreement.

By launching the updated Italian translation of the JDDJ with accompanying texts on the day Catholics and Lutherans remember the 500th anniversary of the excommunication of Martin Luther (January 3), the LWF and PCPCU underscore their commitment to walk together on their common journey from conflict to communion.

In a joint foreword to the Italian edition of the JDDJ, the President of the PCPCU Kurt Cardinal Koch and the LWF General Secretary Rev. Dr Martin Junge write, “We cannot undo the history of separation, but it can become part of our history of reconciliation.”

As the LWF and PCPCU begin commemorating this decade of historical events culminating with the 500th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession in 2030 the point of departure will be unity rather than division, searching “for that which is common within the differences, even within the oppositions, and thus work toward overcoming church-dividing differences.” (From Conflict to Communion, §17).
