WCC congratulates new archbishop of Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church
The World Council of Churches (WCC) has congratulated Urmas Viilma on becoming the new archbishop of the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church. Archbishop Viilma, a member of the WCC Central Committee, was consecrated in his new position in a ceremony held in Tallinn, Estonia on 2 February.
In his letter to Viilma, the WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit said, “At the World Council of Churches, we count on your vocation as an ecumenist as well. It is our hope that you will work within your church and between those churches in Estonia to exemplify the calling ‘that all may be one’.”
“Your presence in the global fellowship of churches brings perspectives and experiences we need. Your church is valuable to our identity and calling,” Tveit added.
WCC President for Europe, Archbishop Emeritus Anders Wejryd represented the WCC at Viilma’s consecration ceremony in Tallinn, alongside other church leaders from the region.
Viilma was previously the Chancellor of the church's consistory. He studied at the Institute of Theology, the Lutheran church's own higher education institute. He was ordained in 1993.
