Adult stem cell conference: A cultural perspective

An International Conference on adult stem cell research is due to open on Thursday in the Vatican. The event three day event entitled “Regenerative Medicine: Adult stem cell conference: A cultural perspectiveFundamental Change in Science and Culture, brings together politicians, medical researchers and students to discuss the latest developments in this field. 

The keynote speaker for the gathering will be dr. John Gurdon, who, together with dr. Shinya Yamanaka, won the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for demonstrating that they could revert skin back to an embryonic-like stem cell state. 


Monsignor Tomasz Trafny, head of the Pontifical Council for Culture's Science and Faith foundation, told Lydia O’Kane that one of the goals of the conference is to educate people on the dialogue that exists between science and faith


“We would like to spread a message globally, to educate people, to reach our believers, our pastors, to let them know the don’t need to live with some fear, they don’t need to make a choice between science and faith.”
