Football must be a school for building a culture of compromise

This Wednesday (11.06), Pope Francis gave a message for the 2014 World Cup, which starts this Thursday (12.06) with the match between Brazil and Croatia, at the Corinthians Arena in São Paulo. The Pope greeted Brazil President Dilma Rousseff and spoke of the fight against racism at all levels. He also pointed out the importance of sport as an instrument to communicate values.

“In order to win we have to overcome individualism, selfishness, all kinds of racism, intolerance and control over human beings. When we are too greedy in life, ignoring people around us, all society suffers.”

The Pope hopes that in addition to the sport celebration, the World Cup may become a solidarity party between the peoples of the world. He also highlighted that sport is more than just entertainment, but above all, an instrument through which to communicate values, helping to build a more peaceful and brotherly society.

“Let’s think of loyalty, perseverance, friendship, sharing, solidarity. In fact, there are several values and attitudes driven by football, which show to be important not only on the pitch, but in all aspects of existence and in the material building of peace. Sport is the school of peace.”
