After presiding at Vespers on Friday evening, November 6, with Bishops, priests, deacons, men and women religious, and seminarians at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and Saints Philip and James in Montevideo, Pope Leo XIV went to the Apostolic Nunciature, where he is staying during his visit.
“I see that Uruguay is a country of young people who have faith,” the Pope said as he appeared on the balcony.
He surprised those gathered outside the Nunciature by saying a few words to them at the end of his first day in Uruguay.
“Where are the young people? Where are the Pope’s young people?' he encouraged, as the young people cheered. “Louder! Good night, everyone.”
Pope Leo thanked those gathered for the welcome he had received throughout the day and spoke especially to the young people who had come to greet him.
“It’s a great joy to greet you, and I hope to see you again in the coming days,” he said.
He then joked, “The Nuncio says he wants to go to sleep, but you can sing for as long as you like! Well, maybe not too late, because the neighbors will want to sleep, too!”
Before taking his leave, the Pope blessed those gathered and wished them all a good night.
