The general secretary of the World Council of Churches Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit on Twitter:
"The beatification of Oscar Romero is a sign of the Spirit of truth. A martyr for justice and peace. Pentecost!"
Archbishop Oscar Romero was beatified by Roman Catholic officials on Saturday 23 May. The archbishop was shot while he celebrating Mass in a cancer hospital’s chapel on March 24, 1980 in El Salvador. The day before, he had delivered a strongly worded admonition to the military to stop abusing civilians. The assassin hasn’t been identified, and no one has been prosecuted for the killing.
The Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero y Galmadez, 15 August 1917 – 24 March 1980, was a bishop of the Catholic Church in El Salvador. He spoke out against poverty, social injustice, assassinations and torture. In 1980, at the Church of the Divine Providence, Romero was assassinated while offering Mass.
